Lesson 10 - 1 John 1:2...that was with the Father and was revealed to us.
Description
Welcome back to the Hope Bible School verse-by-verse Bible study of 1 John. Last lesson we learned that Jesus is “the eternal life,” we learned what the Bible says about eternal life, and that we need to proclaim “the eternal life” to others. In this lesson we’re going to learn about the relationship between Jesus and God the Father.
Let’s read our verse.
1 John 1:2 And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.
Let's focus on: …that was with the Father and was revealed to us.
In order to understand Jesus, it’s important to understand His relationship with God the Father.
Let’s look at some verses that help us to understand this relationship.
In Matthew 3:16-17 we read that the Father is well pleased with Jesus.
Matthew 3:16-17 As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”
In John 3:35 we read that the Father loves the Son and gives Him responsibility over all things.
John 3:35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in His hands.
In Matthew 11:27 we read that the Father has entrusted all things to Jesus and that you can only know the Father if the Son chooses to reveal Him.
Matthew 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
In Matthew 28:18-20 we can see that we are called to make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This verse is showing us the triune nature of God and that Jesus is distinct from the Father and from the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you.
In John 1:1 we read that Jesus, also known as the Word, was with God the Father in the beginning. Since Jesus was with God the Father, in the beginning, He has been there since the beginning of time. This is showing us the eternal nature of Jesus and God the Father.
John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
