Breakdowns and Takedowns: 90s Kids Movie "Blank Check" with Carly Usdin

Published 2 years, 10 months ago
Description

Is Blank Check a transmasc allegory root?? Filmmaker and one of Gabe's besties Carly Usdin joins to discuss the 90s aspirational children's comedy Blank Check, where a 12 year old boy steals 1 million dollars and goes nuts with toys and ice cream. And also has an adult female love interest. This movie is very, very bad and very, very nostalgic. Carly and Gabe talk about capitalism in 90s movies, the connection between masculinity and money, and how we portray "business" to young kids. What toxic messages did we take in about manhood and money as children?

Correction: In this episode, we refer to Rick Ducommun as "the Canadian John Candy." John Candy is also Canadian, making him in fact "the Canadian John Candy."
