This was a fun topic to research! Brad Slavens suggested I look into a man named Holt Collier. Holt Collier was born a slave, killed his first bear at 10, was freed at the outset of the Civil War, fought for the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, was the reason the Teddy bear was named after Theodore Roosevelt!
