Express Investigation: Jharkhand’s irrigation scam sees Aadhar misuse

Express Investigation: Jharkhand’s irrigation scam sees Aadhar misuse

Paddy is crucial for Jharkhand’s farmers, supporting the state’s agricultural economy. However, its heavy reliance on rain presents a challenge as Jharkhand has faced recurring droughts, including the worst in 122 years during the paddy sowing season in 2022. To assist affected farmers, the central government introduced the “Per Drop Per Crop” scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana in 2006, promoting drip irrigation for water conservation and improved plant growth. The Jharkhand government implemented the scheme in 2011.
However, an Indian Express investigation into the implementation of this scheme uncovered misuse of Aadhaar cards, farmers unaware of funds collected by private companies in their name, and multiple instances of fraud. Abhishek Angad from The Indian Express shares the revelations from his investigation.
