Supernatural: A Very Supernatural Christmas (3x08) | Recap & Lore

Season 3 Episode 8 Published 3 years, 5 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 3, Episode 8, A Very Supernatural Christmas recap 🎄 It's the Supernatural Christmas episode: an evil Santa is dragging people up chimneys, Sam wants one last Christmas with his brother, and we finally find out where Dean's amulet came from, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

The episode opens with a grandpa getting yanked up the chimney while his grandson watches (that kid's gonna need therapy). Sam's research points to the Anti-Claus, and Dean is NOT having it: Santa's not real. Meanwhile, flashbacks take us to Christmas 1991, where young Dean (Ridge Canipe) and young Sam (Colin Ford) are alone in a motel room waiting for Dad, and Sam starts asking questions about what John really does. Back in the present, the boys investigate disappearances in Ypsilanti, Michigan (don't ask us to pronounce it), where a very expensive herb on a wreath leads them to the sweetest couple in the neighborhood.

Episode Highlights:

  • Death by chimney, with a Santa boot left behind
  • Sam's research into Krampus and the Anti-Claus
  • Young Dean doing everything he can to give Sammy a Christmas
  • The origin of Dean's amulet: a gift from Uncle Bobby, meant for Dad
  • A Santa covered in blood, eating a cookie
  • The boys forced to sit at the kitchen table for a holiday ritual (and fake-sing Silent Night)
  • The first time we BOTH covered our faces and screamed (poor Sam's fingernail)
  • We were SURE Bobby was at the door
  • Sam's makeshift motel Christmas for Dean, complete with a Merry Christmas sign
  • Fun fact: Jared spiked Jensen's eggnog, so that reaction is 100% genuine

In the lore segment, we dig into winter solstice legends: Louhi, the Finnish witch goddess who stole the sun and moon; the Kallikantzaroi of Greek folklore, goblins who can be distracted by colanders because they can't count past three; the Sámi sun goddess Beiwe, riding in her reindeer-bone sleigh; Italy's La Befana, delivering candy on her broom; and solstice celebrations from Yule logs to Saturnalia and the Dongzhi Festival.

"You fudging touch me again, I'll fudging kill you!" – Dean Winchester
