Supernatural: Bad Day at Black Rock (3x03) | Recap & Lore

Season 3 Episode 3 Published 3 years, 5 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 3, Episode 3, Bad Day at Black Rock recap 🐇 A cursed rabbit's foot turns Sam into the luckiest (and then unluckiest) man alive, a sticky-fingered thief named Bela (Lauren Cohan) makes her debut, and hunters are gunning for Sam on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

The episode opens in jail with our old buddy Gordon, who now has a partner, Kubrick (Michael Massee), doing his dirty work. Apparently each Winchester has a stalker now: Dean has Henriksen, and Sam has Gordon. So cute. Meanwhile, the boys learn that someone broke into John's secret storage unit (using the alias Edgar Cayce), which is packed with cursed boxes and a casket. One box is missing, and so is the rabbit's foot inside.

Episode Highlights:

  • The title, a nod to the 1955 film Bad Day at Black Rock
  • The two thieves, Wayne and Grossman, and a very Final Destination exit
  • Sam's lucky streak: gumballs, scratch-offs, and the one millionth customer at the burger joint
  • Dean mooching off all of Sam's good luck
  • Bela (Lauren Cohan) and her tongs, blue tea towel, and very nice flat (we always forget she's British!)
  • Sam losing the foot, and his luck, and then his shoe
  • Kubrick taken out by a plastic TV remote. Luck is a hell of a thing.
  • Bela's $1.5 million price tag for the foot
  • Bobby's very first idjit (the subtitles still said idiot)
  • Fun fact: Bobby Singer was named after director Robert Singer, who helmed this very kooky Ben Edlund script

In the lore segment, we dig into the surprisingly strange history of the lucky rabbit's foot, which people in 1584 carried to ward off arthritis and cramps. We cover the gruesome Hand of Glory, the belief that witches could take the form of rabbits (and the Welsh belief that a silver bullet through a rabbit would kill one), and rabbit's foot charms in African American folk tradition, including the hoodoo charms sold in 1880s New Orleans. Who knew bunnies were so complex?
