James Barrat says Artificial Intelligence has huge commercial potential and reckless emergent properties, which is shaking everybody up. When we release a new drug, the FDA checks it out— a new airplane, the FAA has to approve it. For A.I., we have nothing. There are many benefits to A.I. but also harrowing risks. One day we’re playing with ChatGPT and the next we’re sharing the planet with something that is thousands or millions of times smarter than us and we don’t know how to share the planet with something smarter. Barrat warns we have to save ourselves. We need government regulation. We don’t want the power or our fate in the hands of 5 CEO’s all of whom have getaway safe houses in the desert, a place to escape or try to escape if everything hits the fan.
