Supernatural, The Animation: Darkness Calling & Loser | Recap
Description
Supernatural: The Animation bonus episode 😈 Between seasons, Berly and LA check out Supernatural: The Animation (also released as Supernatural: The Anime Series), the 2011 Japanese anime from studio Madhouse, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
The anime runs 22 episodes, retelling seasons one and two with almost half the episodes being original stories. We picked the two that give backstories to the special children we barely got to know in All Hell Breaks Loose: Lily Baker and Jake Talley (played in the live-action series by Jessica Harmon and Aldis Hodge).
Episode Highlights:
- Darkness Calling: Lily's backstory, her deadbeat dad, and a crossbow
- The Yellow-Eyed Demon possessing a busty lady this time
- Lily's mysteriously dark hands (the details did NOT add up)
- Loser: Jake in Afghanistan, a bully named Tyrone, and a tank that gets flipped
- Jake's little brother Danny taking "be the man of the house" a little too far
- How neither backstory quite matches the live-action characters
- Jared Padalecki voicing Sam in the English dub... and NOT Jensen as Dean (also, Dean's eyes are brown?!)
- Anime John Winchester as a sexy lighthouse keeper, while they did Bobby DIRTY
- Berly's college anime nostalgia (Inuyasha, Bleach, Death Note)
- The high-pitched anime noises, which we mimic to close out the episode (you're welcome)
The verdict: if you love anime, Supernatural: The Animation might be worth a watch. If not, you're not missing much. Either way, it was fun!
Your turn, hunters: Have YOU watched Supernatural: The Animation? Which anime episode should we cover next? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
