Description
Supernatural Season 2, Episode 20, What Is and What Should Never Be recap 🧞 Dean gets everything he ever wanted: Mom is alive, Jessica is alive, and he's got a girlfriend who's a nurse. But something in this perfect life feels very, very off, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. (Fun fact: this episode is named after a Led Zeppelin song.)
Dean is on the trail of a djinn when he wakes up in a world where the Winchesters never became hunters. Mary (Samantha Smith) is alive and celebrating her birthday in their Lawrence, Kansas, home, Sam is engaged to Jessica (Adrianne Palicki), and Dean is living with his girlfriend Carmen (Michelle Borth). It's everything Dean ever wanted... except his brother can barely stand him, and he keeps seeing a pale girl in white (Melanie Scrofano) who shouldn't be there.
Episode Highlights:
- Mary Winchester, alive and looking fabulous (Samantha Smith, queen)
- The Leave It to Beaver vibes of this not-quite-right family
- The very dated, very photoshopped family photos
- Sam in pastels, engaged to Jessica, and pretty douchey to Dean
- Mom making Dean a sandwich (sandwiches are the best, and it made him SO happy)
- An I Dream of Jeannie shout-out (Barbara Eden > Bewitched, apparently)
- Dean's heartbreaking monologue at Dad's grave
- The choice Dean has to make, and what it costs him
In the lore segment, we dig into the djinn (or jinn) of Islamic belief: Surah Al-Jinn, the chapter of the Quran devoted to them; how they're said to be made of smokeless fire, live in a parallel world, and marry and have families just like humans; their alleged powers, from telepathy to traveling between dimensions; plus Robert Lebling's Legends of the Fire Spirits and anthropologist Vincent Crapanzano's study of the Hamadsha, a Moroccan Sufi order.
Carmen: "I've got the late shift tonight."
Dean: (expecting stripper) "...A nurse. That's so... respectable."
Your turn, hunters: If a djinn gave you your perfect world, would YOU want to leave? And would Dean have stayed if Carmen had been Cassie from Route 666?
