Ep 189 - David Owen - L'Escargot - A remarkable but forgotten horse

Published 3 years, 3 months ago
Description

With the Grand National looming we look back at the exploits of L’Escargot a remarkable horse who won the race in 1975 through the voice of sportswriter David Owen. David has just written a book about the Irish horse who denied Red Rum’s third successive victory nearly 50 years ago as well as winning two Cheltenham Gold Cups.

David reflects on L’Escargot’s career and the quest by his Irish trainer Dan Moore and his American owner Raymond Guest to win the world famous race.  The trainer had narrowly missed out as a jockey in 1938 whilst the trainer’s family had been trying unsuccessfully to win the race since the 1920’s.

David’ new book “ No Snail”, the horse who foiled Red Rum aims to bring this talented and extremely versatile horse back into the limelight. Is he a forgotten horse?
