It is essential in overcoming our mental illness that we have hope.  Hope may be the only thing you have to hold onto.  Hope will push you to try harder and do better. It is essential to develop healthy relationships with individuals who have a mutual respect for one another and the best interest of one another. In some case ulterior motives present themselves and true agendas come to the surface.

It is usually during challenging times you come to really know the value another has for your friendship. It's easy to be a friend when all is seemingly well and life feels right. However, it is another story when the storms of life come and you need your friend to stand by you; or validate your feelings; reciprocate the support you have given to them or make a sacrifice for you. If you know a friend would not, do for you what you would graciously do for them, stop extending yourself. You will be devastated in the end and possibly suffer a long term depressive episode.  Depressed individuals must take extra care and concern because their emotions are delicate and fragile.

You must surround yourself with friends who are trying to understand your depression and are still willing to cope with your tough times, support and love you; but also encourage and lift you up. You need friends who will roll with the hard times and embrace you just the same.
