In the absence of regular traffic and maintenance weeds were beginning to heave up from the cracks and broken spots.
A piece of the truck grill had broken loose and was dragging. The errant strip of chrome was tapping out an intermittent metal buzz as it dragged and bounced along the road surface.
A Morse code signal from the underworld.
