The greek word Jesus used for "poor" means "one who is bent or folded, utterly destitute." It is someone who is so poor, they are reduced to begging. They are completely unable to provide on their own and can only rely on the gifts of others. It also means "to be thoroughly frightened, to cower down or hide one's self for fear."
