Supernatural Season 2, Episode 2, Everybody Loves a Clown recap 🤡 A killer clown stalks a traveling carnival, Sam's clown phobia gets a workout, and we meet Ellen, Jo, and Ash at Harvelle's Roadhouse on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Two sad episodes in a row? We're hanging in there, hunters.

The Winchesters are deep in grief mode after the premiere. Dean is burying himself in rebuilding the Impala at Bobby's junkyard, while Sam cracks Dad's voicemail code (on a flip phone, no less) and finds a message from someone named Ellen. That leads them to a hunters' hangout, Harvelle's Roadhouse, run by Ellen Harvelle (Samantha Ferris) and her daughter Jo (Alona Tal), who greets Dean with a rifle to his back. Great introduction. Then there's Ash (Chad Lindberg), the mullet-rocking genius who needs exactly 51 hours to find the demon.

To kill time (Dean's words, not ours), the boys take a case: a clown at a traveling carnival is murdering parents after their kids let him in. So naturally, they go undercover as carnies.

Episode Highlights:

• Dean checking out Jo, and Jo not buying his cheap lines (but she does have eyes)
• Sam's fear of clowns, and Dean's defense of his fear of flying: planes crash!
• The Winchesters' short-lived minivan era
• The boys picking up trash as carnival janitors
• A funhouse with a random organ in it (why?)
• Sam finally admitting he's not okay, the most beautiful moment of the episode
• STILL wondering what John whispered to Dean

In the lore segment, we dig into the Rakshasa of Hindu mythology, shape-shifting demons with the power of illusion (and a role in Dungeons & Dragons), and how this version was inspired by an episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker, one of Eric Kripke's big influences. Then we revisit the 2016 wave of creepy clown sightings with folklorist Benjamin Radford, author of Bad Clowns, and why phantom clown panics tend to pop up during times of social anxiety.
