Supernatural Season 1, Episode 19, Provenance recap 🖼️ A haunted painting leaves a trail of bodies across upstate New York, and Dean plays wingman so Sam can finally get some lady love on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

It opens with one of the goriest cold opens so far: a couple buys an old family portrait from the 1800s, and things go VERY wrong. The boys track the painting to an auction house, where Sam meets Sarah (Taylor Cole), the owner's daughter and an antique specialist, and Dean practically shoves them onto a date. Sam's clearly out of his element at the fancy restaurant. It's adorable. But this painting keeps changing, and it's hiding a lot more than it seems.

Episode Highlights:

• That cold open. Holy shit. (Also: why can we see an old lady's throat slit that deep, but not more booty? CW, be better.)
• Dean pushing Sam to date again, and Sam finally giving in
• The disco-themed motel room 
• The boys' dramatic fence jump, a callback to Asylum
• The creepy attacker's POV shots that kept us guessing
• Sarah not freaking out AT ALL about grave-robbing on a first date (kudos, Sarah)
• The mysterious doll
• Sam FINALLY getting a kiss, and Dean's proud "That's my boy."

In the lore segment, we dig into real haunted paintings: The Crying Boy, blamed for countless house fires; the Portrait of Samantha Houston at the Driskill Hotel in Austin; Stagecraft (the "hanging man" painting); Edvard Munch's The Dead Mother (yes, the guy who painted The Scream); and The Hands Resist Him, the creepy painting that sold on eBay after viewers claimed just looking at the photos made them sick.
