Fix the joint and the bite but leave the maxilla deficient, and the patient stays sick. Prosthodontist Dr. Jeffrey Rouse of Spear Education explains why every airway, TMJ and sleep treatment plan has to start with the upper jaw, and why he made zero traditional sleep appliances last year.

In this episode:

- Why the maxilla comes before the mandible, the joint and the bite

- The biggest mistake: placing an anterior implant before the patient is healthy

- A Class II div 2 case that improved with brackets on the upper teeth only

- His son's story, and what the research now says about ADHD and airway

- Why he tells dentists not to play the medical billing game

- Why most patients need 3mm of protrusion or less

Plus dental news: the No Surprises Act and good faith estimates, an NIH sealant program for middle schoolers, CAD/CAM growth, and the end of Dentacoin.

Dr. Jeffrey Rouse is a prosthodontist in private practice in San Antonio, Texas, and resident faculty at Spear Education. He has practiced with Drs. Frank Spear and Gregg Kinzer in Seattle, taught prosthodontics at UT Health San Antonio from 2004 to 2019, and co-wrote Global Diagnosis with Dr. Bill Robbins. He is a past president of the Southwest Academy of Restorative Dentistry.
