015: An Moral Argument for an Armed Society

Season 1 Episode 15 Published 3 years, 7 months ago
Description

Talk Back to Me

The American Debate on Gun Control regularly breaks apart when a utilitarian argument meets a rights-based one. The problem with how we think about violence, is that we too often resort to using it as a method of enforcement, instead of an action that is judged based on the context.

The idea that an armed society is a polite society may have allure, but ultimately falls short of establishing a moral requirement, and instead opens the grounds for an ends-justify-the-means conclusion.

So we engage with an argument which attempts to show that in order for a society to be moral at all, it must not have a government infringing on that right, and the exercise of the right to bear arms is part of agency being a necessary option to begin with.
