The Big Book says we are powerless over one thing - alcohol.

Yet it goes on and on about our ability to impact those around us, in both helpful and in unhelpful ways. 

Powerless means having "an inability to influence". 

And the definition of influence: the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself.
