BWI Daily: Have teams figured out Penn State's new offensive formula?

Description

Penn State football has only lost one game but is in the middle of an offensive slump. So what is causing that issue? That's what Thomas Frank Carr, host of the BWI Daily Edition, digs into on Wednesday's show. Subscribe to the BWI Daily, so you don't T-Frank's breakdowns! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

T-Frank begins the show discussing something that James Franklin said earlier this season. The show host asked Franklin if he can tell when teams get a read on his offense by a certain week in the season. To hear Franklin's answer check out the show.

From there, T-Frank uses that answer to break the season into two sections and see if he can find a correlation between opponents understanding Penn State's new identity and how they adjust to it. The numbers he found are illuminating.

He looks at the team's top three back to see how their yards-per-carry figures have changed over the season and how the quarterback is affected by that. So from there, he looks at Sean Clifford's play-action numbers to reveal how things have changed as the season has worn on and teams get more information about Penn State.

Part of play-action passing is getting athletes in space to break tackles and make plays. So, T-Frank dissects the number of broken tackles by Penn State athletes from the first and second parts of the season. Again, the numbers tell a very illuminating story.

Finally, he talks about the reasons behind these figures. Why is Penn State's output waning over time? He discusses offensive space, threats on the field, and the ever-elusive 'balance.'
