This is the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Washington. 

In this podcast, the third in a multi-part series on US-Israeli relations, Chuck and Danny discuss what the term “special relationship” actually encompasses, including military aid and cooperation, joint strategic consultations and planning, the US commitment to Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge, strategic diplomatic cooperation and more. 

They attach particular important to one lesser-known but critical aspect of the relationship –the US veto in the Security Council, without which Israel would have been subject to sanctions decades ago, particularly regarding the annual resolution calling upon Israel to dismantle its purported nuclear capabilities. 

Future episodes will address what being pro-Israel means today; cases where the two sides have failed to live up to each other; and four critical questions for the future - whether the price of the relationship has been a significant loss of Israel’s independence, whether Israel could even survive today without the US, where the relationship is heading and what can be done to preserve it for the long term.
