David Byrne's True Stories at 40: The Weirdest Movie of 1986?
Description
Forty years ago, David Byrne made a movie about a fictional Texas town full of eccentric characters, shopping malls, unusual musical performances and people who seemed perfectly comfortable being completely bizarre.
And somehow, True Stories may be even more relevant today than it was in 1986.In this episode of Stuck in the '80s, we revisit Byrne's wonderfully strange directorial debut, a movie that defies easy explanation. Part musical, part comedy, part satire and part affectionate portrait of American life, True Stories follows Byrne as he explores the fictional town of Virgil, Texas, during its Celebration of Specialness.
Along the way, we encounter a memorable cast of characters, including John Goodman's lovelorn Louis Fyne, and a soundtrack featuring Talking Heads favorites such as "Wild Wild Life," "Love for Sale" and "City of Dreams."
But what exactly was Byrne trying to tell us? Was he celebrating American eccentricity, poking fun at consumer culture or simply inviting audiences to enjoy the weirdness?
We originally explored True Stories on the podcast years ago, and its 40th anniversary gives us the perfect excuse to revisit that conversation. Whether you've loved the movie since 1986, discovered it years later or still aren't entirely sure what to make of it, there's plenty to discuss.
